VO₂ max: why aerobic fitness matters beyond athletes
VO₂ max is often discussed in endurance sport, but aerobic capacity also shapes everyday energy, recovery and long-term health.
What VO₂ max measures
VO₂ max describes the highest rate at which the body can take in, transport and use oxygen during intense exercise. It reflects several systems working together: the lungs, heart, blood vessels, blood and active muscles.
It is usually expressed relative to body mass, allowing a rough comparison between people of different sizes. Laboratory testing is the most direct method, while watches and exercise machines provide estimates that can be useful for tracking but should not be mistaken for a diagnosis.
Why it matters in ordinary life
A larger aerobic engine makes submaximal tasks feel easier. Walking quickly, climbing stairs, travelling, playing sport and recovering between resistance-training sets all occupy a smaller percentage of your capacity.
Higher cardiorespiratory fitness is also strongly associated with better long-term health outcomes. That does not mean one test score defines health, but it does make aerobic fitness a valuable quality to train rather than an optional extra.
How to improve it
Most people benefit from a combination of easier aerobic work and some higher-intensity training. Easy work builds volume with manageable fatigue. Intervals provide a stronger stimulus near the upper end of capacity.
- Accumulate regular conversational-pace aerobic work.
- Use one carefully dosed interval session when appropriate.
- Progress duration or workload gradually.
- Keep strength training in the programme.
- Retest under similar conditions rather than chasing daily watch estimates.
The coaching point
Cardio should not be used only to burn calories. Treat aerobic capacity as a trainable performance quality with its own progression, recovery and technique. The best programme is not the most punishing one; it is the one that improves the target while fitting around the rest of your training and life.
